World Diabetes Day Awareness Activities

diabetes day

November 14th marks World Diabetes Day. Created by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) in 1991, this days aims to promote advocacy and awareness of diabetes as a worldwide health issue. What can you do to help the cause and mark this day? Think of ways to help others learn about the disease. If you’re not exactly sure what to do, check out these easy ideas that bring awareness to the community.

Host a Speaker

Invite a diabetes educator, or someone who has been living with the disease, to come speak at your child’s school, a community organization or local library. This will bring attention to the issue and help those who don’t know about the disease to learn more about the signs and symptoms.

Create Posters

Build awareness about diabetes with a poster campaign. Hold a poster-making contest at your child’s school or community center, or get a group together to make diabetes-themed artwork together. Post the posters to raise awareness. Each year the IDF creates a focus for this day (such as women and diabetes), use this theme to design posters around.

Collect Contributions

Help to fund a diabetes research organization with a collection campaign. Hold a fundraiser such as a walk/run or a diabetes awareness event in a local park to raise money. Donate the proceeds to a diabetes-related foundation or research fund of your choice.
