Colorful Christmas Hot Chocolate
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! There’s a chill (or more than a chill) in the air, a few flakes are falling from the sky and the kids are clamoring for something warm and toasty to snack on. If you don’t have time to bake a treat or need a quick fix in a pinch (after a pre-Christmas Day sled riding session), a colorful cup of hot cocoa will do the trick. Colorful cocoa? Instead of using regular hot cocoa mix, swap it out for a homemade white hot chocolate mix. Add in Christmas colors and a few holiday accents to spice up the kid-friendly drink and make it fabulously festive.
- White chocolate bar
- Red and green food coloring
- Optional: Whipped cream, holiday mini marshmallows (in red and green), red and green crystal sugar
- Use a cheese grater to shave (or finely chop) the chocolate bar into a bowl. If you want to save some time, use white chocolate chips instead of a bar. You don’t need to shave or chop these.
- Pour as much milk as you need into a saucepan. Use roughly 6 cups of milk per 10 oz. of chocolate. Heat the milk to a simmer.
- Stir in the chocolate. If you (and your child) are a super-fan of chocolate add more of it or use less milk in the mix.
- When the chocolate is completely melted, stir in either red or green food coloring (not both). You can also divide the white hot chocolate into two pans, making one red and one green batch. The green even works as a Grinch-inspired treat!
- Optional: Add a touch of whipped cream, topped with marshmallows or sugar crystals.
